Lane Bryant Plus-size Commercial Banned by NBC, ABC due to ‘Indecency’
Two major TV networks reportedly sized up a sexy ad starring full-figured models — and decided it wasn’t a good fit.
The 30-second Lane Bryant spot — a love letter to plus-size models featuring newly-christened Sports Illustrated cover girl Ashley Graham — was turned down by ABC and NBC, reports TMZ.
A rep from NBC on Thursday denied the network had outright "rejected" the ad.
"As part of the normal advertising standards process, we reviewed a rough cut of the ad and asked for minor edits to comply with broadcast indecency guidelines," the peacock network said in a statement provided to the Daily News. "The ad was not rejected and we welcome the updated creative."
Lane Bryant, which claimed its ad was rejected "as is," is currently deciding whether to re-submit it for consideration, a rep for the retailer told The News.
"I don’t think these models are any more nude than any other models we’ve seen on TV," she said. "This was not a hard-hitting conversation about body positivity. This was a playful way to engage our women and all women."
This wouldn’t be the first time Graham and the plus-size retailer have
faced an advertising double standard: In 2010, ABC and Fox initially
refused to run a supposedly racy lingerie ad, the Lane Bryant rep said.
"Victoria's Secret commercials are airing all throughout the day, but
when it comes to a Lane Bryant commercial, we have a little bit of
extra, you know, overflowing, and then everybody freaks out,” Graham
told CBS Newsat the time.
The 28-year-old stunner also recently shrugged off an unsolicited
critique from former SI model Cheryl Tiegs, who last month slammed her
for "glamorizing” an unhealthy lifestyle with her curves.
